According to NPR (Feb. 2014), Master Sgt. Mendoza received a belated Medal of Honor. On Oct. 4, 1944, he single-handedly broke through a German counterattack. Already wounded in the arm and leg, he grabbed a machine gun and ran to the crest of a hill where he saw 200 enemy troops charging up the slopes with flame-throwers, machine pistols, rifles, and hand grenades. He immediately began to engage the enemy, firing five clips. Here is an example of what it means to be willing to lay down your life for a cause. This weekend we see Jesus on his way to Calvary teaching some valuable lessons about sacrifice. How can we move into this kind of a mindset to rise above our own pride and fears?
